Shipping Industry Is Targeted By The Hackers

Now-a-days, hackers are targeting the shipping industry confirmed by one of the staffs of CyberKeel who once investigated a random medium sized shipping firm and found a shocking email.

Co-founder Lars Jensen gave a statement saying, “Someone had hacked into the systems of the company and planted a small virus. They would then monitor all emails to and from people in the finance department. Several million dollars were transferred to the hackers before the company cottoned on.”

The virus works as such, if the shipping firm gets an email from fuel suppliers regarding sorting out the payments, the virus would instantly change the bank account number into that hackers account.

This happens even before the email gets read by the recipient(s).

In June, after the NotPetya cyber-attack, many companies including shipping firms were badly affected. The damage mount converting to money would be 300 million dollars.

Mr. Jensen and Morten Schenk together started this company more than 3 years before.

The industry is now painfully aware that physical shipping operations are vulnerable to digital disruption.

These hackers can get into some very sensitive information which can bring consequences for the global shipping conglomerates.

A report on the case by the cyber-security team at telecoms company Verizon describes, “They’d board a vessel, locate by barcode specific sought-after crates containing valuables, steal the contents of that crate – and that crate only – and then depart the vessel without further incident.”

Patrick Rossi who works within the ethical hacking group at independent advisory organization DNV GL says, “We know a cargo container, for example, where the switchboard shut down after ransomware found its way on the vessel.”

Shipping industry is taking some initiatives to stop piracy by growing awareness among the firm. They all are kind of concerns what might happen next.
