No More Encrypted Messages In Australia

Apple and Facebook will be enforced with the new law where they have to provide access to encrypted messages to the Australian Govt.

The Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull is trying very hard to get the access as he thinks that these encrypted messages could end up delivering to the criminals and terrorists. Just like Watsapp, there are other apps that use end to end encryption, if intercepted no one can read those.

Though security experts believe that citizen’s privacy will be protected if this kind of strong encryption is maintained.

Many countries, including Australia, have laws in place that can force messaging services to hand over a suspect’s communications to police with an appropriate warrant.

Since the messaging companies don’t receive a legible copy, end to end encrypted messages cannot be handed over.

This encryption also helps ordinary citizens to get hacked by criminals or spies since they roam across the internet.

If this fact is true then there is another fact which cannot be denied that in such way criminals can also communicate with each other.

Prof Alan Woodward, a computer scientist at Surrey University said, “I think most people agree that there is a problem. The trouble is trying to force companies to decrypt via legislation is the very reason end-to-end encryption was introduced – particularly by US-based firms post-Snowden – to give their global customer base confidence that no government could get them to do what the Australians now propose.”

According to Mr. Turnbull, those encrypted messages will stay dark to the reach of law which is totally inacceptable.

He said companies had to “assist the rule of law” and provide law enforcement with access to encrypted messages.

Prof Woodward said, “For this to work, the companies will have to change their technical architecture or somehow weaken the encryption. Either is a bad idea.”

Mr. Turnbull said, “The laws of mathematics are very commendable, but the only law that applies in Australia is the law of Australia.”
