Iranian Hackers ‘SamSam’ Were Charged By US

The attack lasted for 34 months. For ransom they were holding several schools, hospitals, universities not in one but in several counties. Through this those convicted persons were earning millions of dollars.

But somehow two Iranians were charged for the attack as the US prosecutors believe so.

The FBI said, “Although the alleged criminal actors are in Iran and currently out of the reach of US law enforcement they can be apprehended if they travel, and the United States is exploring other avenues of recourse.”

The news has been spread that those 2 men were carrying some ransomware attack. Which included a spiteful software that happens to lock systems and other files and can only be free if paid fees.

On Wednesday, assistant attorney general Brian Benczkowski of US said, “The allegations in the indictment unsealed today – the first of its kind – outline an Iran-based international computer hacking and extortion scheme that engaged in a 21st-Century digital blackmail.”

Also, there were 2 other Iranians who were authorized by the US Treasury for simplifying the substitute of Bitcoin into Iran’s monetization which is known as Rial.

230 victims suffered for the scheme that valued more than 30 million dollars.

5 different govt. departments were affected of the city called Atlanta in the US with the ransomware called SamSam. This affected the inhabitants as they were not being able to pay their utility bills.

The FBI also mentioned about the victims in the UK and Canada.

“To execute the SamSam ransomware attack, cyber actors exploit computer network vulnerabilities to gain access and copy the SamSam ransomware into the network. Once in the network, these cyber actors use the SamSam ransomware to gain administrator rights that allow them to take control of a victim’s servers and files, without the victim’s authorization.

The cyber actors then demand a ransom be paid in bitcoin in order for a victim to regain access and control of its own network.”
