Award To Online Classes Causes Controversy

Very recently TED talk organizers have decided to share $280m fund among 8 projects.
Unfortunately, one of the recipients of the fund already got criticized for the project.
As per the plan of Waterford Upstart, almost 2,50,000 children in the US are about to get pre-school education via online.
To review the award the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, shortly known as (CCFC) has invited on TED.
These both gathered with the conference at TED2019. It took place in Vancouver, Canada with presentations based on technology, design and entertainment.
This project first started in Utah and at this moment in 15 other states of US. There are screen-based activities that last for 15 minutes offered to the children belongs to lower income families or rural communities mainly. These children would not otherwise be getting any early years of education.
A study says, that there are almost 2.2 million children living in the US who don’t have any programs funded publicly as their early education. The charity wants every child to step into the school with same level of education.
The project provides both devices as well as the internet connectivity for those who can’t afford the fees.
CCFC wrote a letter to TED saying, “Firms like Upstart are poor substitutes for high-quality education, and funding online programs instead of high-quality early education will make inequality worse, not better.”
At educational professor Nancy Carlsson-Paige who works at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts added in the letter “Kids learn by playing, exploring and interacting with adults – not by memorizing letters, numbers and colors presented to them on screens.”
Upstart added, “We fully believe children need to learn through play, but technology is a wonderful tool if used correctly.”
